BP stops oil flow into Gulf of Mexico
BP plc, an energy company which has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom, is one of global in nature. The initials ‘BP’ are from one of company’s earlier names ‘British Petroleum’ (legal). BP, using a valve (half – turns with slow and careful monitoring) 5000 feet below the sea bed, blocked the oil that was coming out from its well in Gulf of Mexico. However, the officials from the company stated that the pipes that were being used would not be good for use in the long term and would not handle a full seal.
BP’s Senior Vice President, Kent Wells was more than delighted with this closure. However, according to him it was the beginning and more had to be done. President Obama said this was a positive side but again, he was also apprehensive.
The final turn to the valve was given at 3:35 p.m. (Eastern Time). Now, it was for the experts to monitor the pressure of the oil inside. If the pressure reading was found high for 48 hours, it would be a good thing as it indicates that no more oil is seeping and the well is intact. After this, few valves would be opened; allowing a minute quantity of oil to flow out and get collected in containment ships, the sea floor would experience seismic testing. This will be done to ensure no leakage of oil in future.
