Clinton Calls For Pakistan to “Additional Measures” Against Terrorism
Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, Pakistan on Sunday called for “additional measures” against terrorism, in an interview shortly after his arrival in Islamabad.
“We expect additional measures and the Pakistanis that they be taken,” Clinton told the BBC.
Secretary of State pointed out that Washington and Islamabad “increased cooperation in combating terrorism.”
But “there is no doubt in anyone’s mind, that if the origin of an attack against the United States tracks and leads to Pakistan, this would have a devastating impact on our relationship,” he said.
The failed attempt of Times Square in New York in May, which he accused Pakistan’s Shahzad Faisal, was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban group Tehrik-e-Taliban (TTP).
This is the main movement that operates from Pakistan’s tribal areas, regarded by Washington as headquarters for Pakistani Taliban groups and their allies in Al Qaeda, and as a rear base for the Afghan Taliban.
Clinton stressed that there was a link between all these groups and asked Pakistan not to make distinctions between them.
He also confirmed that Washington planned to classify as “terrorists” to the rebel leaders Haqani very active against the international coalition in Afghanistan, but considered close to the Pakistani intelligence services.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that U.S. General David Petraeus, recently appointed head of the international coalition deployed in Afghanistan, militates in favor of that entry.
During his previous visit to Pakistan in October, Clinton angered when he suggested publicly that Pakistani officials know where they hide the heads of Al Qaeda since the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States.
U.S. says that cooperation with Islamabad on safety made much progress since then.
