Court Granted Bail to Former Media Mogul Conrad Black
A federal appeals court granted bail to former media mogul Conrad Black, weeks after the Supreme Court a lower court to submit the final decision on your case.
Black, who renounced his Canadian citizenship to become a member of the House of Lords, was convicted in 2007 along with three other Hollinger International executives of swindling $ 6.1 million to the shareholders of the company.
However, last month, the Supreme Court weakened the law of “honest services” which had been central to convict Black. The justices left in the hands of a lower court decision to revoke or not the conviction.
Black, who has served more than two years of a sentence of six years and a half in a low-security federal prison in Coleman, Florida, also was convicted of obstruction of justice after being caught on video taking boxes of documents from their offices . The documents were sought by government investigators.
A phone call to Black’s lawyer, Miguel Estrada, was not immediately returned.
A spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons said Black, 65, was jailed on Monday and it was unclear when it might be released.
Before the Supreme Court ruling, prosecutors had said that Black should remain in prison because the high court’s decision would not affect the count of obstruction of justice.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Monday.
Hollinger International owned the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, The Daily Telegraph in London, The Jerusalem Post and hundreds of local newspapers in the United States and Canada.
