Police Department’s Domain Name Scooped Up by Domainer After it Expired
After a Tennessee police department let its domain name expire, it was scooped up by an alleged domainer who now uses the website to complain about traffic cameras issuing speeding tickets and promoting external links.
According to the new owner, Brian McCrary, he noticed the domain name expired and was available for registration. He subsequently registered the domain through Godaddy and became the new owner of www.bluffcitypd.com on the 22nd of May.
The website is now being used to display comments from people complaining about being issued traffic fines via traffic cameras. There is also a number of links to external websites promoting information related to traffic cameras and traffic fines.
According to Police Chief David Nelson the domain name was the responsibility of an officer who was on medical leave. According to him the expiration of the domain name slipped up on the department.
It is currently not clear if the department will attempt to institute any actions in an attempt to recover the domain name and reinstate its online website. With domain expirations taking a couple of months before actually expiring it has to be asked how long the officer has been on medical leave.

With domain name Auto-Renew and the amount of expired notification emails sent by the registrar, there really is no reason for the “slipped up” domain expiring.
Domain names are very important to many people / companies yet many act very careless with them and this is one example how.
Brian just happens to be somebody who is making his voice be heard, in a unique way, so good for him and it is working.
Jamie, I could not agree more with you.
Your domain name is everything you and your business is on the Internet. You get numerous alerts before a domain really expires and is deleted and made available for registration again. I do not agree with what the police are stating.
In any event, I am glad for Brian and support him in it!
It just got away from em eh? I doubt it. I have over 20 domains and they’re all set to auto-renew. But I’ve also been the victim of having a domain name sniped when it expired and NetSol sent notices to an old residence address even though they had updated information. They never followed up on my complaints and after a period of time, there was no point in my pursuing it. That was about 8 years ago. If you’re in charge of the police department’s domain name, you’ll know if it expires. And they changed the expiration interim to 75 days from the previous 45. They had 75 days after expiration to reclaim the domain name. Somebody at the cop shop failed to delegate responsibility if whoever was in charge wasn’t available to fulfill his duty. I wonder if bluffcitypolice is available?
