Police Departments’ Website Comes Under Hacking Attack
It was confirmed that the Strathclyde Police Departments’ website had come under attack from Chinese hackers and was closed shortly after 6pm last night. The department confirmed that a number of weblinks appeared on their website that diverted users to a Chinese website with a history of distributing computer viruses.
The department stated that their computer investigators were investigating the incident and stated that anyone who made use of the website yesterday should feel assured that their computers would not have been put at risk. While the investigation is ongoing, as a precautionary measure the website was taken offline.
Police confirmed that the purpose of the attack on their website remains unknown. Users making use of Internet Explorer browsers were silently redirected towards robint.us, as Chinese registered website. According to Symantec this website poses a high severity risk to users as this website has been identified as being after an attack that targeted older versions of the Internet Explorer browser.
