Turmeric of the lily family and is found in Asia. Its name arrives from the Arabic word ‘Kurkum’ meaning ‘saffron’. The reference is to its colour which is similar to saffron. In ancient times its main use to color the robes of the Buddhist monks. Researchers have found that turmeric lowers the cholesterol levels and has significant anti-inflammatory and liver-protecting properties. When its external effects are concerned, it is used to treat sores, injuries, athlete’s foot and ringworm. The curcuminoids present in the turmeric have been known to have magical anti-oxidant properties that can hinder the growth of cancer cells, and can protect the liver from toxins and prevent it from free radical damage. The Turmeric has an energy value of 77.6Kcal, with 0.4g of proteins, 7.4g of total fats, 1.3g saturated fats, no cholesterol, no fibre and 1.6mg of sodium. Making it highly nutritious and therapeutic.
