Well I dont think any listing can be completely accurate.. i mean you can argue any of the positions on the list.. but the fact that they have MJ in the top 3 is respectable.. its almost impossible to really say who deserves to be #1 let alone even be on such a diverse list.

  2. MARY

WHO COME UP WITH THIS LIST AND HEART WASN’T ON IT COME ON THEY BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST FEMALE BANDS FOR FOUR DECAIDS??!!!??!

  3. Arturo

I think this list is terrible, it is impossible that Prince can be better ranked than Queen, Bob Marley, David Bowie or Madonna. Elton John was #28, and Lennon and McCartney were over the number 30th…NO WAY! Have they seen any live performance of Freddie Mercury or Elton John?

This kind of lists is the better example of the poor level of music education of the judges, totally partial, local, and politically correct…what a bummer!

  4. Sue S

Hard to believe that Journey almost didn’t make the list. Very few vocalists can even come close to Steve Perry’s wonderful, soaring tenor voice. This band has been around in some form for almost three decades and is one of the greats.

  5. F**K THIS LIST!!! WHO THE HELL PUT MICHAEL JACKSON UNDER BOB DYLAN!!! HE SHOULD BE ABOVE THE DAMN BEATLES TOO, KIDS NOWADAYS CAN NAME SEVERAL MICHAEL JACKSON SONGS (BLACK & WHITE). THEY CAN’T NAME BEATLES SONGS, AND ESPECIALLY NOT BOB DYALN!!! I don’t care what no one says Mike has had the greatest impact on music!

  6. AConcernedMusicListener

Good job putting together the most bland of artists that will appeal to the most casual of listeners. The Beatles were great for their time, but not for ALL TIME. Honestly, what should I have expected from VH1?

  7. Ben

Biggie and Pac need to be higher. Im watching it right now and Bob Dylan is 5 and MJ is 2. Coldplay is fucking homo. I know theyre in the top 20 but u2 should be higher. This vote shouldnt have just been among celebs. They should have put it out to the rest of the world to see who was actually the most popular

  8. This list is not accurate. The top 5 are all screwed up. This is the correct order:

    1. The Beatles
    2. Michael Jackson
    3. Led Zeppelin
    4. Rolling Stones
    5. Bob Dylan

I do not AGREE with this order but this is how VH1 actually had it listed. And yes, MJ should be # 1(I would have, however; been okay with a tie with The Beatles). Some of these artists were seriously higher than they ought to have been. And WTF are Green Day, Jay-Z(above Biggie and 2Pac?) and Beyonce doing on this list?

  9. Donald Gibson

YO THAT WAS NOT THE BUSINESS TLC TLC TLC OK THEY SHOULD BE ON THE LIST SOMEWHERE OK THEY WAS ORIGINAL FRESH NOBODY COULD DO WHAT THEY DID THINK BOUT IT AND THEY WERE PIONEERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT SO THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST BEEN ON THE LIST SOMEWHERE ANYWAY MICHAEL JACKSON IS #1 SON THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEY HECK THEY TALKIN BOUT P.S. I COULD SAY ALOT MORE BOUT THIS LIST BUT IM JUST TO IRRATATED CRRAZZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Marco Polo

    …Grateful Dead?

  11. DDT

Folks, let’s get real here. To think that Journey, Coldplay, or Notorious B.I.G., to pick three at random, belong on any list of “the 100 greatest artists of *all-time*” is patently ridiculous, but we live in an age of exaggeration and ignorance.

The intended audiences for these lists do not understand that music existed before 1955, and that artists such as Johann Sebastian Bach (*not* the guy from Skid Row!), Giuseppe Verdi, or Duke Ellington, again to pick three at random, are merely names that their grandparents might vaguely recall. In other words, the idea that this list is anywhere near representative of *all the music that humans have created since we started making music thousands of years ago*, which is my understanding of what *all-time* means, is laughable.

No, “all-time” is a gross exaggeration. This list is more properly representative of artists from the rock era (roughly 1955 to the present), artists almost exclusively from North America and Europe, and artists categorized almost exclusively as rock, pop, or soul/urban artists. Within that narrow definition, the top ten picks are expected and predictable although they reflect a lack of understanding of historical consequence.

For example, Ray Charles fused the grit and groove of rhythm and blues with the passion of gospel to create soul, in the process pioneering a showy singing style that continues to be used—and overused—today. However, Charles is buried in this list at #43. Similarly, Chuck Berry synthesized the framework of rock ‘n’ roll that influenced, notably, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan, all of whom influenced hundreds if not thousands of subsequent artists. Yet Berry is listed at #25. Elvis Presley (#8) fares better, at least making the top ten, but Presley should be at the top of the list: Presley transformed rock ‘n’ roll from a rude and possibly transitory aberration into a lasting cultural phenomenon, and then he transcended that categorization to become an American icon. David Bowie, Madonna, and Michael Jackson (who married Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie), among many others, would be inconceivable without Presley.

  12. Andrea

Are the Temptations really not on this list?

  13. Tracey

This list to no ones surprise is rock heavy, but with that said I don’t have a huge problem with the Beatles being ranked # 1, personally I would have preferred Michael Jackson. What I do have a problem with is the rankings and the omissions ….

Lets get to the Omissions, Ummm…….. where’s Dianna Ross, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Janet Jackson, or bon Jovi. and the worst omission is……… Where the Hell is FRANK SINATRA. SMH, terrible job.

    And,

How is it that the women didnt garner much respect. How is it that Mariah Carey is ranked in th 90s, Mary J. Blige in the 80s, Janis Joplin in the 70s and Whitney Houston in the 60s.

How is Prince (who I love) ranked ahead of Bob Marley and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE ranked ahead of Eminem, LL Cool J, TUPAC, and everyone from 66 down. He shouldn’t even be on this list.

  14. Danie

Uh The Runaways was the first real all female band of all time why the hell aren’t they on there?! Also the beetles as number one? Please.

  15. Jesse

This list is sooo flawed…Outkast, Abba and Sade! Really…I wouldn’t think of these as being in the Top 100 of all time…Frank Sinatra should be on this list, as well as a handful of other classic talent…Also if you have to put Radiohead and Coldplay on this list, you can’t exclude other revolutionary bands of that caliber like Muse and Nine Inch Nails.

  16. rikg

    red hot chili peppers?
    the eagles?
    zz top?
    eric clapton/cream?

  17. jade

i am really shocked that elvis was ranked so low, i’m not a huge elvis fan but he is the king of rock and roll! how can they put prince before elvis? i was just shocked by tht! they barely talked about him too! i beieve tht was very disrespectful the way they ranked him after all he’s done for music!

i was really shocked not to see janet jackson, TLC, bon jovi, diana ross, the supremes, jackson 5, and the eagles on there…i don’t think this list was very good.

I was hoping that michael jackson was going to be #1 but of course the beatles were… i’m not saying the beatles suck but i just think they’re to overated.
this is how i think the top 5 shoulda been:
    1. michael jackson
    2. elvis
    3. the beatles
    4. james brown
    5. bob dylan

  18. Brett

Some people here need their heads checked. People who think Michael Jackson should be above the Beatles need their heads checked. The gross exaggertaion of MJ’s talent since his death is alarming.

  19. Regina

MJ should be and is #1. The Beatles can’t dance. David Ruffin can sing Sir Paul under the table. The Beatles made an impact no question MJ’s impact is so much greater. His music touched the entire world. The Beatles cannot say that. Mariah Carey being in the 90′s is terrible. I was disappointed with the entire show.

  20. PROMISE

What the Fuck ????? MICHAEL JACKSON IS CLEARLY NO.ONE !!!!VH1 PEOPLE ARE FUCKING RACIST FAGS !BEING ASIAN OFCOURSE”MAKES ME FUCKING PISSED THAT I WATCHED THIS DAMN 100 LISTS TO SEE THIS END LIKE THIS….MICHAEL WAS KNOWN IN EVERY CORNER OF THE WORLD ‘BLACKS,WHITES,MIDDLE EASTERNS,ASIANS,EUROPEANS !!! BEATLES DON’T COMPARE A SHIT WITH MJ!!!!!!!!!!the end

  22. Matthew

Everyone only remembers who tops these lists and since it’s always The Beatles (obviously deserved – nobody has come close to surpassing them) it’s pointless. And this list is shocking – Beyonce? Prince in the top ten? Also, the ‘poor man’s The Smiths’ Radiohead get in yet Morrissey’s old band isn’t even in the list. It’s pathetic at times.

There’s some right rubbish bands in the bottom half also, where the likes incredibly influential and classic British bands like The Stone Roses, Oasis and Blur are horribly overlooked.

I would like to remind VH1 that Britain is the home of the greatest music the world has ever witnessed – leave it for us to decide.

  23. Matthew

Also, some of you mentals think Jackson is better than The Beatles? Ha ha ha, that made my day. I even think Ringo is more talented than Michael Jackson.

  24. Katie

    no Eric Clapton????!?!?! seriously people!!
and the Beatles should absolutely be #1! they are without a doubt the most influential band of all time and definitely deserve the top spot.
Also, the only reason you people think Michael Jackson should be #1 is because he died. If MJ was still alive, we all know he wouldn’t be #2, but more like in the 50′s.

  25. jenn

Damn unfair ..i am so upset i watched all this 100 list and this was the result! Even my granma who doesn’t know a word of english is a huge fan of Michael Jackson !!! Michael is a legend and generations to come will know Him as the Greatest Artist,Dancer and Humanitarian. He can’t be compared not even with the Beatles!

  26. Randy

Dave Matthews Band anyone? They are the greatest live band of all time and have inspired a generation

  27. Ben

    to Katie,

You are a fucking retarded cunt if you think MJ would be in the 50′s if he were still alive. When you are so well known around the world like MJ and commonly referred to as the King of Pop you deserve to be where he is if not #1. Not only that but he was better at entertaining than anyone else in the top 5. They couldnt dance like he did.

  28. Ben

Im sick of these top 100 lists. Theyre fun to watch and all to see what makes it but they always do a terrible job. For example the top 100 hip hop songs might be the best example. They have songs like Get Low and Cars with the Boom but they manage to lave out Big Poppa, Hypnotize and dont even put some of 2pacs best songs up. Along with that this list shows no respect to rappers. With jay-z as their highest rated rapper at 47 is just bull shit. I dont care what you guys say but when you listen to the lyrics of songs most of the time the rappers have the best lyrics. Pac and Biggie should at least be top 40.

  29. Darksider OnerForever

BEYONCE is on this list??? Are you fucking serious? She shouldn’t even be in the top 1000000000!

  30. Nathan

im gonna get some hat for this, but i love Nirvana (my favorite band ever) and i think they should be in the top 10 instead of Prince( move every1 down one number {ex 10-9, 9-8} and put Nirvana as 10 and take prince off the list!

  31. Frank

Woah, people saying that The Beatles influence was not greater than Michael Jackson are stupid. Remember, ARTISTS that no more about music than you guys voted for this. The Beatles number one forever, Michael Jackson is only number two because he died. Before he died, he would have been maybe 5 or 4.

  32. Jay

This list is ridiculous. Who the fuck is Elvis Costello? Are you kidding me? The Doors should’ve at least been in the top 20′s and Van Morrison should not be on the list period. Vh1 had the balls to con out The Runaways of their spot on the list. The first all girl rock band wasn’t considered one of the greatest artist of all time according to Vh1. It was a waste of time watching that and seeing purely bland pop artists and with no artistic edginess to them like ZZ top, The red Hot Chilli Peppers, and The Runaways. Its complete bull.

  33. Mitchell

Where the fuck is blink 182?? and oh by the way, if this is all time, not saying i like the classical and stuff but shouldnt like Beethoven and Mozart be in there somewhere??

  34. Ivan Obregon

Lots of bad listings (Justin Timberlake instead of Eminem? Prince higher than Bob Marley? Eric Clapton n the Supremes not even listed? Jay Z at 47? Janis Joplin at 72?). But one’s really got to be unsophisticated and provincial-minded to be unfamiliar with the unbelievable creative explosion that were the Beatles. Only someone who hasn’t heard their extraordinary diversity of songs on their genre-breaking albums and only knows the Beatles from a few clips of when they first started out (as pathetically depicted in VH1′s segment) could actually scream out their ignorance in BIG, BOLD LETTERS, PRACTICALLY SHOUTING OUT, HEY, LOOK OVER HERE, SEE HOW STUPID I AM ABOUT MUSIC! MJ was a tremendous and extraordinary artist, a genius no doubt, but the cultural, musical and popular-media impact of the Beatles influenced and altered his musical world as much as anyone else’s who grew up with or were exposed to the music of the Beatles. Ironically, MJ knew this so well that he spent 50 million dollars to buy and own all of the songs ever made by the Beatles.Regardless, they were all great, and people should stop trying to put either one down to make some sort of ugly point, especially racist ones (both ways; racism’s not a one-way street). Just go out there and listen to all the music they made, read up on their technical innovations and musical achievements, and appreciate and value what you will (or can) as you recognize why so many people love these artists so much. One thing they never meant to be, however, was an inspiration for small-brained haters, so grow up.

  35. NTR

Like someone said, the EAGLES is not on this list. How can anyone forget the Eagles??? Is it because of Don Henley’s pompous ass? LOL

  36. Sally Housecoat

I cannot believe that The Smiths did not make this list, but Cheap Trick did! How the fuck did Cheap Trick make this list?! Or Talking Heads. Are you fuckin kidding me? This is such bullshit. The Smiths/Morrissey is better than most of those acts. Although I HATE the grateful dead, i was surpised they didn’t make this list either. I’m sick of people acting like velvet underground were good. Everyone knows they were fuckin’ boring and depressing as hell! This list is absolute bullshit!! Where the fuck was Iron Maiden? Those 200 artists who compiled this list should go fuck themselves!!

  37. Jessie and Matthew Hater

How are you guys (Jessie and Matthew) hating on Radiohead? First of all, you can’t even put NIN and Muse in the same sentence as Radiohead, let alone the same list. Muse wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for Radiohead’s influence. Radiohead is the most revolutionary band of our generation (if you don’t agree, then why don’t you listen to Kid A or OK Computer) Also, although I have a lot of respect for the Smiths it is just absurd that you would call Radiohead “the poor man’s Smiths.” While Tom Yorke may have a similar falsetto voice as Morrisey, the rest of their music isn’t even comparable. Radiohead has made some of the most beautiful and intriguing albums ever and continue to amaze people. They come out with a hit album and instead of selling out like many of their contemporaries, they completely change up their sound for the next album and it still f*cking rocks. If anything, Radiohead should be in the top 20. Maybe you should listen to these bands or do a little research before you make such outrageous claims.

  38. Jessie and Matthew Hater

Oh and anyone bashing the Talking Heads for being on the list is just a moron. They should also be higher. They revolutionized rock and roll music and may be one of the biggest influence on most of the alternative music we hear today.
