WATER ON THE MOON IS WIDESPREAD AS ON EARTH
U.S. scientists at the University of Tennessee have found that the water on the moon is spreading the same way as on Earth, in the moon’s surface as well as within. It is verified that water is “absorbed” in the upper layers of the Moon after finding “lunar dew” on its surface. With this discovery, scientists have been able to decipher the similarities between Earth and Moon
This discovery published in Nature, but scientists do not know the source of this water. In fact, they are studying whether it could come from comets that crashed in the past, containing ice, during or after the formation of the Moon and Earth.
The evidence that there are volcanoes on the moon form more than four billion years gives researchers a clue that water could proceed from there, because on Earth the dynamics of volcanoes is driven by water, says the study.
This discovery has been discovered through the study of minerals from lunar basalt, collected during the 1971 Apollo mission, using a secondary ion mass spectrometer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, where scientists found a calcium phosphate mineral very similar to those on Earth.
“This demonstrates a close relationship between the chemical and geological Earth and Moon, which was previously expected. Now we must reassess the Moon, a direct relative of the Earth,” explained lead author of the discovery Taylor and Yang Liu.
